A UPFA candidate in the Central Province who had been doling out fake honourary doctorates using the name of an organisation called “Vishwa Samadhi Padanama” was taken into custody, Kandy police said.
According to police the candidate was taken in today while he was preparing to hold a ceremony to award the fake doctorates to a group of monks at a temple in Hantana.
One hundred certificates mentioning the fake honourary doctorates were also taken into custody by police from the suspect’s possession.
The arrest was made when another group of monks had complained to the police about the ceremony to award the fake doctorates.
Police inquiries had revealed that the candidate had organized two events on the same day to award doctorates to two groups of monks; one ceremony in the morning and another in the evening.
Police said that the candidate was released after getting a statement since he is contesting the election. - Daily Mirror
