UNP selected decent, capable candidates for Southern polls

"UNP and UPFA candidates nominated in the Galle District lists to contest the Southern polls are poles apart. While we have selected decent and capable candidates, including three former MPs, the UPFA has nominated a set of people who are fighting amongst themselves to get more ‘manapes’ over the others," said Galle District MP and UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunatillake. He was addressing a polls propaganda meeting at the Kandegoda residence of the former SPC member and present candidate Asoka Dhanawansa de Silva.

One of the UPFA candidates who claimed he would be the next Chief Minister by hook or by crook, has been remanded for several offences. It was alleged that he had harmed his own party candidates and committed other unlawful acts. "If the Chief Minister’s post is given to a person of his calibre only God knows what will happen to the SPC. The masses are not fools to vote people of his caliber into power," he said

The MP said, the UNP too was quite happy over the victory of the forces in ending the LTTE terror. But it was unreasonable for the government only to claim the credit of that victory. The UNP governments too had contributed much to pave the way for the victory. Even Karuna Amman had said that cease-fire agreement signed between the UNF and the LTTE had helped him to abandon the terrorist movement.

Karunatillake also compared the victory over the LTTE to the success acheived in ‘Lissana Gaha’ competition conducted during New Year celebrations. "First climbers will not be able to reach the top but they perform the vital task of removing the grease applied on the pole. Ultimately the last man, who achieves victory, should also thank those who helped him by clearing the grease from the pole".

Former MP and SPC candidate, Jayntha Jayaweera said, the LTTE war was the result of the late Bandaranaike making Sinhala only the official language, in 1956. The poor children were also debarred from learning in the English medium though the children of the rich were taught in English overseas. Bandaranaike’s children too got that chance. The UNP was the only party capable of developing the country. The last SPC had closed down several industries resulting in an increase of jobless people.

SPC candidate, Asoka Dhanawansa de Silva said, the government had received billions of rupees from foreign countries to help tsunami victims. But the lion’s share of those funds was used to develop other areas of the country at the whims and fancies of the Ministers, while the poor victims were undergoing much hardships due to lack of essential facilities. Though the President promised to give tsunami victims everything necessary to live a comfortable life within a year of his election as the President, there were thousands of tsunami victims even now, without houses of their own.

SPC candidates, Sasanka Jayasekera, Jayasiri Nanayakkara and Upali Sirisumana also spoke.
