President pledges no room for misuse of state land

09 December 2009
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has pledged to bring every inch of arable land under cultivation, and said he would not allow the misuse of any state-owned land.
He was speaking at a function at Temple Trees in Colombo yesterday (Dec. 07) to hand over 'Ran Bima' land deeds to 5,000 landless people.

Mr. Rajapaksa recalled that he was a young parliamentarian when parliament adopted the land reform act in 1972.
The 'Mahinda Chinthana' policy concept has focused its attention on the landless people, and the government has been able to accrue benefit for them far surpassing the expectations, he said.
Mr. Rajapaksa promised that he would ensure a prosperous country for the future generation.

The government’s faith in agriculture and the farming community has paid dividends, as the country remained stable amidst the collapse of even stronger world economies due to the global financial crisis, said the president.
