  2010-04-13

In an assault by thugs on a politician at Dolosbage Road, Gampola and some supporters of Dilum Amunugama, Kandy District candidate of the UPFA, six had succumbed to injuries.

Thugs of a powerful candidate of the Front had assaulted them and set fire to the van they travelled in Mr. Amunugama said.  A complaint had been lodged with the Gampola police.

Thugs had also indulged in attacks from Sunday afternoon in Helagama. A vehicle of Abdul Cader UNP candidate had been damaged.

A Kandy police high up said the SSP Gampola had been asked to conduct investigations on attacks to UPFA supporters at Nawalapitiya and Gampola.

An Army team had been deployed to assist the police in preserving peace in Nawalapitiya, a Senior Army Officer said.

Mr. Mahindananda Aluthgamage said at a media briefing at Kandy, two government politicians and the JVP were behind these attacks.

Tight security FOR NAWALAPITIYA BATTLE
  2010-04-13

Tension prevailed in Nawalapitiya yesterday as candidates were planning to resume the election campaign for the re-poll fixed for April 20.

Security was tightened in the area with several police teams including Special Force Task personnel being deployed to maintain law and order.

UPFA candidate and former Minister D.M. Jayaratne said the candidates would begin their campaign soon, probably after the National New Year.

He said candidates should not be obstructed from carrying out their normal election campaigning.

UNP candidate Mano Ganesan said they had already started house to house campaigning despite obstructions from their opponents. Several supporters of Mr. Ganesan and of his colleague Lakshman Kiriella were attacked during the pre election period. (Read More)

Police take action against DNA leaders
  2010-04-13

A Court yesterday ordered Democratic National Alliance (DNA) activists including Vijitha Herath, Sunil Handunnetti, Arjuna Ranatunga, Lakshman Nipunaarachchi and detained General Sarath Fonseka’s wife Anoma to make a statement to the Fort police.

Fort police officers told Colombo Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that the DNA had violated election laws by holding a public meeting opposite the Fort Railway Station 48 hours before Thursday’s general election to call for the immediate release of General Fonseka from detention.

Police said the public meeting had obstructed the movement of people at the Fort railway station on April 6 and that the DNA had committed an offence under section 70 of the Parliament Election Act No 1 of 1981 and moved Court to issue notice on them. Further inquiry was postponed for April 23.

Nawalapitiya poll to decide fate of Mano Ganesan
  2010-04-13

The re-poll in the Nawalapitiya electorate on April 20 is set to decide the political fate of Democratic People’s Front (DPF) leader Mano Ganesan, sources said yesterday.

The Commissioner of Elections annulled the results at 37 polling centres at Nawalapitiya in the Kandy District, citing election malpractices

Sources said Mano Ganesan, who contested the April 8 poll from the Kandy district as a United National Front (UNF) candidate, now needs the critical support of around 16,000 Tamil voters in the Nawalapitiya electorate to increase his preferential vote count.

DPF secretary and Western Provincial Council member Nallliah Kumarakuruparan pointed out that Mano Ganesan’s victory would ensure parliamentary representation for Kandy district Tamils.

Kumarakuruparan failed to win a seat in Thursday’s poll despite obtaining 34,460 preferential votes as a UNF candidate from the Colombo district.

UNF candidate Prabha Ganesan, brother of Mano Ganesan, is the only Tamil MP elected from the Colombo district with 42,851 preferential votes.(

Rule of law did not prevail at polls CaFFE
  2010-04-13

The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said yesterday that last week’s parliamentary election was not free and fair, because the rule of law did not prevail and the government flagrantly violated polls laws.

Director of CaFFE Keerthi Tennekoon told The Island that while ruling party candidates violated every clause in the Elections Act, the Police and Elections Commissioner simply looked on.

"Take for example the incidents that occurred in Nawalapitiya on April 8. By 8.30 a.m. everyone knew that goon squads deployed by a government Minister had chased away opposition polling agents in about 30 voting centers and began impersonating voters," he said. "But until 4.30 p.m. nothing was done to arrest the situation. If the Elections Commissioner and Police acted in the morning, there would have been no need for a re-poll."

Ministers openly violated the law and even went to the extent of promoting themselves with stickers pasted on their official vehicles. Never have such things happened in Sri Lanka’s history of elections. This of course, was in addition to them illegally displaying cut outs and banners right up to polling day and also abusing State resources, Tennekoon said.

"In Nawalaptiya, the area most affected by violence, the cut outs of a government Minister were removed only on April 9. They resurfaced yesterday. The Minster concerned is a law unto himself. Other candidates are not permitted to campaign in the area. They are chased away after their vehicles are smashed up."

South CM’s home attacked
  2010-04-12

By Hemantha De Silva and Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa

The house of the Chief Minister of the Southern Provincial Council Shan Vijayalal De Silva in Ambalangoda came under attack yesterday morning.

The house was stoned by unidentified men who came in a trishaw and during the attack another four houses surrounding the Chief Minister’s house too were targeted.

The rest of the houses belong to an urban councillor and the coordinating secretary to the Chief Minister.

The incident was reported at around 3 a. m.  and the Chief Minister was not present inside the house at the time of the incident.

According to the Ambalangoda police the chief minister’s mother was inside the house and she has managed to escape without any injuries.

A complaint has been lodged at the Ambalangoda police station and a special team has been deployed into the area to arrest the suspects who are believed to be hiding in the area.

Meanwhile in another similar incident in Matale, the double cab that was parked at the house of private secretary to the Central Provincial Councilor Pramatha Bandara Tennakoon was set on fire by a group of masked men.

The cab belongs to the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government. According to the Secretary the cab was parked at his place following an engine trouble.

It is believed that a group of men are supporters of a member of the ruling UPFA. A complaint was lodged at the Nawula police station and they are investigating into the incident to arrest the suspects.

Do NOT interfere, UPFA tells world
  2010-04-12

The UPFA which won the April 8 election stressed yesterday that the ‘international forces’ should respect the massive mandate given to it by the people at the April 8 election, and not disturb them in governing the country accordingly for the next term.

Addressing the first press conference after the election victory, Former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that there were local and foreign elements that attempted to sabotage the government’s activities in the past.

He said that these threats were still looming, and therefore requested all those elements not to disturb or disrupt his party in running the affairs of the country for the next period.

“They must respect the people’s mandate reflected through this election results. We kindly request them   not to disturb us,” Mr. Alahapperuma said. (Read More)

Big boost for SLFP at the expense of its partners
  2010-04-12

Of the original 39 JVP members, including those from the National List, elected to the last Parliament, only five survived the General Election 2010. Among them were Wimal Weerawansa, who polled a formidable 280,672 preferential votes in the Colombo district and Weerakumara Dissanayake, elected to the seventh Parliament from Anuradhapura. Dissanayake is the only other successful NFF candidate of 15 who joined the fray. He polled 27,102.

One of the original group did not contest Thursday’s election.

Political sources said that the result was not only disappointing but also embarrassing, though the National Freedom Front (NFF) leader emerged a major winner. NFF media coordinator, Anuruddha Bandara told The Island that they were satisfied with the result. He said that a split in what he called the Marxist vote in the Kalutara District had denied NFF nominee, Jayantha Samaraweera an opportunity to retain his seat. Former JVP heavyweight Nandana Gunatilleke, who entered the fray in Kalutara on the UPFA ticket as an SLFP nominee, had caused this unfortunate situation, he said.

Sunil Handunetti (Colombo), Ajith Kumara (Galle) and Vijitha Herath (Gampaha) were the other successful members of the original JVP parliamentary group. Bandara said that the JVP could not have even managed to retain three, if defeated presidential candidate, Gen. (retd) Sarath Fonseka had not contested along with JVP candidates. The only other successful JVP/DNA candidate was former National cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

Bandara said that Weerawansa had beaten two party leaders in Colombo to secure the top spot. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and DNA leader Fonseka were no match for Weerawansa, he said.

Three other JVPers of the original group are expected to enter Parliament through the National List. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, widely believed to be one of the major players in forming the UNP-JVP alliance to contest the presidential election, will be the JVP’s only National List representative. The NFF will appoint Mohammed Musammil and Achala Jagoda as its National List members.

Among the unsuccessful NFF candidates are Piyasiri Wijenayake (Gampaha), Anjan Umma (Gampaha), Wimal Weerawansa’s brother, Sarath (Matara), Dharmasena Kodituwakku (Hambantota), versatile artiste Buddhadasa Vithanaarachchi (Kegalle), Aravinda Vanniarachchi (Matale), Nimal Premawansa (Mahanuwara), Nimal Piyatissa (Nuwara Eliya), Raja Ranjith Gunaratne (Polonnaruwa), Senaratne de Silva (Kurunegala), Samansiri Herath (Puttalam) and Deepal Gunasekera (Ratnapura).

The JHU, which contested the April 2004 election and won nine seats in the last parliament, is now reduced to two. JHU spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe told The Island that of the five JHU candidates, who entered the fray on the government ticket, Ven. Athureliye Rathana thera (Gampaha) and Patali Champika Ranawaka (Colombo) had been successful.

Ven. Ratana and Ranawaka polled 112,010 and 120,333 votes to secure fourth and third places, respectively in the two districts. The JHU fielded three other candidates in Kandy, Kalutara and Kurunegala. Asked whether their candidate in Kandy would stand a chance of being returend , Warnasinghe denied the possibility.

Two JHU members, Ven. Ellewela Medhananda thera and Ven Omalpe Sobitha thera are on the UPFA National List.

The CWC was another loser with only three elected members at the 2010 General Election. CWC President Muttu Sivalingham told The Island that of the nine candidates fielded on the government ticket, only three had been successful. He said that all three successful candidates had contested from Nuwara Eliya. "We secured the three top slots," he said. Their candidates in Badulla, Kandy, Ratnapura and Colombo were not successful. Responding to a query by The Island, he expressed confidence that the CWC could secure three National List slots.

At the previous election, the CWC contested on the UNP ticket and secured eight seats, including two National List slots.

Upcountry People’s Front (UPF) stalwart P. Radhakrishnan, who contested on the UPFA ticket, failed to retain his seat. He said that the UPF had contested on its own in Badulla and Nuwara Eliya but unsuccessfully.

Matale UPFA MPs clash
  2010-04-12

Former Local Government and Provincial Council Minister Janaka Bandara says one of his UPFA colleagues, a newcomer to politics in the Matale District is responsible for violence in the district. An irate Bandara says a gang on the payroll of the newly elected politician on Friday mercilessly attacked H. M. Rupasinghe, a member of his parliamentary staff. "This is unfortunate," a spokesman for the former Minister told The Island yesterday, expressing concern that some UPFA MPs were causing mayhem.

Bandara said that a gang on the payroll of this particular politician was on the rampage targeting SLFPers, who steadfastly supported his campaign, though President Rajapaksa requested members to celebrate their victory peacefully.

He also accused the opposing camp of tarnishing his image in the run-up to the April 8 election.

According to him, his opponent distributed scurrilous leaflets ahead of the election and also used a section of the media to target him and portray him as a sinister character.(
