The UNF nomination list controversy in the Moneragala district took a new turn yesterday with the party’s district leader Ranjith Madduma Bandara hitting out at UNF Uva provincial council member Janaka Tissakuttiarachchi whose name was deleted from the nomination list leading to the initiation of an inquiry into the matter by the party. Mr. Madduma Bandara told the media at his Moneragala residence that the nomination list submitted to the District Secretariat was the same that was signed and given by party headquarters Sirikotha. “This is a case of a non-entity trying to destroy the party by spreading baseless allegations, and if the CID wishes to hold an investigation we would give our full support,” he said. It was alleged earlier that the UNP nomination list for the Moneragala district had been tampered with and the name of Janaka Tissakuttiarachchi deleted and another name entered in its place after the nomination list was approved by the party. The National Freedom Front (NFF) has accused a section of the SLFP of targeting its Nuwara Eliya District candidate Nimal Piyatissa and his supporters. NFF sources told The Island that a gang of SLFP supporters had stormed Piyatissa’s main campaign office at Walapane last Friday (Feb 26), the final day to hand over nominations. Sources said the gang had warned Piyatissa that he should be ready to face the consequences unless he stopped political activity in the electorate. Sources said that SLFP supporters had been upset by the NFF organising a vehicle parade on its own in the area. The attack came a day before UPFA candidates contesting the April 8 General Election, at a ceremony held at Jayasirimahabodiya, pledged not to engage in violence.
