Supporters of the government launched their propaganda campaign for the upcoming presidential election soon after it was declared on Monday night. A demonstration organised by the UPFA supporters in Moratuwa paraded the streets under the leadership of Minister Jeewan Kumaratunga. The UPFA supporters in Kalutara organised a demonstration with the participation of Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena. Chief Sanghanayake of the Galle District Andagoda Punnasara Thera, Kalutara Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Meril Wijesinghe and Moulavi M.L. Adam Lebbe conducted religious performances.
The supporters of the government in Matara led a demonstration under the Mayor of Matara Upul Nishantha. They paraded the streets and distributed leaflets highlighting the services rendered by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the nation and the need to re-elect him.
The UPFA supporters in Horana launched a leaflet campaign in the town under the leadership of Horana Chief SLFP Organiser Vidura Wickremanayake.
Provincial Councillor of the Eastern Provincial Council Ariyawathie Galappathi and Minister of the Provincial Council Thuraiappa Navaratnarajah marched to the Provincial Council premises with a large number of supporters shouting slogans to express their support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
They distributed leaflets in the Sinhala and Tamil Languages. The supporters of Trincomalee Chief SLFP Organiser, Minister Susantha Punchinilame displayed cut-outs of President Mahinda Rajapaksa all over the town.
Chief Minister Berty Permalal Dissanayake kicked off the election campaign in the North Central Province from Anuradhapura town by distributing propaganda leaflets among the people. A large number of supporters joined him.
Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon gave leadership to a demonstration organised by the supporters in Dambulla area. Addressing the demonstrators he said General Sarath Fonseka was not a suitable choice as the opposition’s presidential candidate.
Chief Minister Uva Province Shasindra Rajapaksa and several Provincial Council Members gave leadership to the demonstrators in Badulla. They held a rally in front of the Badulla Central Bus Stand. In Galle UPFA Organiser and Provincial Minister of Sports and Rural Development U.D.G. Ariyatilleka and several leaders distributed leaflets with their supporters.
