The owner of a house where opposition common candidate General Sarath Fonseka stayed for several hours on the day he made a visit to his home town in Ambalangoda and also celebrated his birthday came in for a rude surprise early yesterday when a special police team visited his home and carried out a search.

The owner of the house who is a close associate of General Fonseka lodged a complaint at the Ambalangoda police station yesterday morning said that 21 people claiming to be from the Special Task Force (STF) had carried out a search at his home at 3 am yesterday saying it was an order from the Defence Ministry.

According to the complainant, the men came without a court order. Police media spokesman SSP I.M Karunaratne said the owner Marakkalage Chandrasiri had lodged the complaint seeking a guarantee of his future safety.

“The security personnel who said that they were from the police searched the house for nearly an hour. They searched the house saying they had received information that there were suspicious items in his house”, the owner claimed.

When contacted by the Daily Mirror STF commandant DIG K.M.L Sarathchandra said he was not aware of such a search operation.
