| The Opposition leader of the Baddegama Pradeshiya Sabha, Lakshman Ananda Lenerolle resigned from his office on Thursday after losing a bet in which he claiming that the UNP would win the Galle District at the recently concluded Southern Provincial Council election. In a talk show telecast on a private TV channel, Lanerolle had told Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Lionel Premasiri, that if the UNP fails to win the particular election in the Galle district, he would resign. Lanerolle handed over his resignation letter to Baddegama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Anura Narangoda. His supporters numbering around 500, who gathered near the Pradeshiya Sabha, urged him to reverse his decision, but they dispersed after he explained the circumstances which led to his resignation. Both the ruling party and opposition members of the Pradeshiya Sabha, requested him to change his decision, but he stuck to his promise. UNP member Premalal Liyanage filled the vacancy created by Lanerolle’s resignation. Lanerolle told The Island that he had to honour the promise he made and even if Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told him not to, he would not have changed his decision. |
