Police have better work than removing posters and cutouts. Besides, what is the harm in putting them out? Cabinet spokesman
  2009-10-02

Cabinet spokesman Minister Anura Yapa said, the Police has more important work to do than removing posters and cutouts. In any case, what is the harm there in putting them out? he asked.

The Minister gave this answer at a media briefing today (01), when he was questioned by the media as to why the Police despite IGP s instructions is not removing the posters of President and the cutouts. There are even cutouts and posters in front of the Galle police, the media pointed out.

The Minister said, personally he was not against these posters and cutouts being displayed. But, there ways of reaching out to the voters without these methods. Strictly speaking, according to election laws, even door to door canvassing is disallowed,he added.

If candidates are to get a fair deal the election laws need amendment, which right now is like tying a person’s hands and legs and asking him to swim on water, he asserted.

  2009-10-02

Controversial Southern Provincial Council election UPFA candidate Nishantha Muthuhettigama is presently staying in Colombo with his family.

"I am now fed up with the whole setup. But I have finished all my election propaganda work. If I continue to stay in Galle I will get into further trouble. Some interested parties are creating problems for me", a dejected Muthuhettigama said yesterday.

He said that he would gather a large crowd of supporters and attend a UPFA election rally to be addressed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa within the next few days. He would thereafter return to Colombo and would go again on October 10 to cast his vote.

He said that he was hopeful of topping the list among all UPFA candidates.

"The more I stay in Galle these days more trouble awaits me. It is far better to allow others to their canvassing so that they would leave me alone" he said.

He was earlier charged before the Galle Chief Magistrate and is on bail.
