Common Left presidential candidate Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne says Tamil speaking voters should think twice before choosing either incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa or his main rival, former Army Chief turned politician Sarath Fonseka due to their controversial roles in the recently concluded war against the LTTE. Karunaratne, one of the 22 candidates in the presidential election fray, believes there is absolutely no difference between Rajapaksa and Fonseka, fielded by the UNP-JVP-SLMC-TNA-Mano Ganeshn combine. Responding to The Island queries, the veteran politician said that both were equally responsible for the death and destruction caused during the war and nothing could be as ridiculous as expecting them to settle the national problem. The UNP charged yesterday that dozens of houses of its supporters and its offices had been razed to the ground in the Polonnaruwa district during the last few days allegedly by supporters of a powerful Minister representing the area.
The latest incident was the arson attack on the residence of UNP-affiliated National Youth Front President Nilantha Punchihewa on Thursday night.
Addressing a news conference, UNP Polonnaruwa district leader Earl Gunasekara said a damage of Rs. 1.5 million had been caused to the residence of Mr. Punchihewa who was now left only with what he was wearing. The powerful Minister’s driver, who led this attack personally, had accidentally dropped his purse, National Identity Card and Driving Licence during the commotion at the scene.
Mr. Punchihewa had recovered them later. The UNP MP produced them at the news conference yesterday.
“We do not have any party office in the district now except the district office guarded by police officers. All the others have been burnt down. Flames are still visible at some places. As for Mr. Punchiheva’s house, these gangs have destroyed everything from clothes to furniture,” he said.
