Vote on account said to be only for 4 months brought for a full year Nandunneththi

In the recent past the government stated that they would present a vote on account instead of a budget to allow a new government that would be elected after a general election to be held next year so that they could have an opportunity to present a budget of their own to the Parliament. However, the vote on account presented by the government is far from it and ahs been presented for the whole year said JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunneththi when he spoke to ‘Lankatruth’ in Parliament today.  Speaking further on the vote on account Mr. Handunneththi said, “The government stating they would present the vote on account only for the next 6 moths have prepared one that would cover the whole year till December, 2010. This is not an opportunity given for a new government and it is against all ethical conduct of a government.   
   
JVP not sure of Sarath

 The JVP will not field its leader Somawansa Amarasinghe as the party’s presidential candidate, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told The Island. He said the JVP continued to look for a common candidate who was neither JVP nor UNP.

The JVP’s priority, he said, was the abolition of the executive presidency.

Gen. Sarath Fonseka, he said, would not be the JVP’s presidential candidate. The General, he said, had not announced his entry into politics and the JVP would decide on its candidate after the government declared a presidential election.

   
Newly appointed Southern councillors not happy with portfolios

 Some Southern Provincial Councillors who were appointed as Ministers last Thursday by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, were unhappy with their portfolios. One councillor who was a minister in the previous council, did not receive any portfolio or a post and former leader of the House also did not receive any post this time.

Speaking to The Island, the newly appointed Education and Cultural Affairs, Food Supply and Distribution, Trade and Co-operative Affairs Minister V. K. Indika, representing the Hambantota District, said that he has topped the Hambantota UPFA list polling the highest percentage of preferential votes in the entire Southern Province, but the government did not offer him the Chief Ministership.

Indika said he has secured the highest percentage of preferential votes among his fellow party candidates who vied for the CM post. He bagged 56,855 preferential votes which was 29.46 per cent, while the party had received 192,961 votes from the Hambantota District. Shan Wijelal de Silva, the Chief Minister has obtained 92,292 preferential votes from Galle District and per centagewise, it was 26.07. Matara District UPFA team leader Hemal Gunasekara received 63,323 votes which was only 24.63 per cent of the 257,110 votes polled from the district.

   
Present Govt. has no philosophy or a policy UPFA Parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapakse

The present UPFA government does not have any political philosophy or policy says Parliamentarian of the UPFA Wijedasa Rajapakse. He said this participating in an interview with ‘Lakbima’ weekend Sinhalese newspaper. Speaking further Mr. Rajapakse has said, “Any party should have its own policies. However, the policies followed by the present UPFA government are not the ones we formulated as ‘Mahinda Chinthanaya.’ Most of the people in the government today are those who mercilessly attacked and did not agree with the ‘Mahinda Chinthanaya’ policies. The present government does not have a political philosophy or any policies. Those in the government at present are opportunists and work for their own personal gains only.  
   
Muttuhettigama takes oaths before astrologer

UPFA politician Nishantha Muthuhettigama, took his oaths as a member of the Southern Provincial Council before astrologer and Justice of Peace Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena on Saturday. Muttuhettigama did not take oaths at the Presidential Secretariat before President Mahinda Rajapaksa along with others elected to the council last week. On the day of the swearing in ceremony, he left for Singapore on a brief private visit. Mr. Mutuhettigama says he would show the president his power by getting more than 120,000 of his supporters to gather at the Galle town on November 5th when the new council sessions begins. He is demanding he should be the next Chief Minister
   
Minority parties meet today to discuss alliance

The minority parties who are working towards forming an alliance are to meet in Parliament today. A leader of one of the parties in the alliance told Daily Mirror yesterday that they would meet to discuss issues pertaining to the proposed alliance.

Asked if the alliance will field a candidate for upcoming presidential election the sources said no decision has been arrived at yet. “We will discuss upcoming elections when a poll is declared,” the party leader said.

Meanwhile one of the Tamil parties, which are also a part of the minority alliance, the Democratic Peoples Front led by MP Mano Ganeshan, is expected to sign an agreement on a common opposition alliance with the UNP today.  

   
TNA to register as new political party

Leaders of the Tamil National Alliance -- an amalgam of four Tamil parties -- will meet this week to discuss plans to register the TNA as a recognized political party and also to invite other Tamil parties to join it.

At present the TNA consists of the TELO, the EPRLF, the All Ceylon Tamil Congress and a section of the TULF.

TNA parliamentarian N. Sri Kantha told Daily Mirror yesterday this meeting had been convened at the request of TELO General Secretary Prasanna Indrakumar.

He said it was essential for the TNA to have a separate constitution and a new set of office bearers. Mr. Sri Kantha said the party hoped to invite youngsters especially professionals and academics to join the party in this post conflict period.“Professionals and academics stayed away from politics during the war but we need them now to come forward and work for the community,” he said. Wimal predicts grave political situation

NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday that similar to what happened in the country in 2005; Sri Lanka would be divided between national and foreign forces in 2010.

“Under the guise of a common candidate opposition political parties are attempting to bring into power a candidate who will dance to the tune of foreign forces,” he said.

Mr. Weerawansa told the NFF Kurunegala district organization that nationalistic forces would emerge victorious even against a hundred common candidates. .......... (Read More)

   
Conspiracy by the Govt.: UNP

The UNP which commented on the US attempt to quiz Chief of Defence Staff Gen.Sarath Fonseka, said that it was a totally unwarranted act.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said this could also be a conspiracy by the government to scuttle the possible plan by Gen. Fonseka to enter politics.

“It is speculated that Gen. Fonseka is planning to join politics.  Earlier, many other government officials and ministers visited the US.  But, they were not questioned by the US government. So, this can be part of the conspiracy hatched by the government to block Gen. Fonseka’s entry into politics,” Mr. Attanayake said.

   
UNP pledges to set up Constituent Assembly

The main opposition UNP pledged yesterday to set up a constituent assembly, if it won the next election, to change the constitution and to replace the presidency with the post of an elected Head of State responsible to parliament.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya who was the chief guest at a ceremony held at the Jayawardene Centre to mark the 13th death anniversary of President J. R. Jayewardene said the party would scrap the executive presidency within 180 days.

Mr. Jayasuriya said President Jayewardene during the later part of his life admitted that the powers vested in the executive presidency was excessive and had to be changed.

Mr. Jayasuriya said he was making the pledge to abolish the executive presidency in the presence of the Maha Sangha who participated at the alms giving held to invoke blessings on the late president.

Paying a glowing tribute to President Jayawardene, Mr. Jayasuriya said JR was a statesman who thought of the next generation than the next elections.
