Fonseka tells prelates he intends to cleanse administration
  2009-12-01

The common Opposition candidate at the forthcoming Presidential Election General Sarath Fonseka told the Malwatta and Asgiriya prelates yesterday (30) that his ambition was the formation of a just and efficient administration free of bribery, corruption and vice.

General Fonseka paid homage to the Sacred Tooth relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa and called on the most Venerable Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thero of Malwatte.

Subsequently he called on the Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero of the Asgiriya chapter.

General Fonseka told the prelates that he would be supported by a number of political parties and that there were several others from the government willing to support him at the Presidential Election.

He said that he was able to successfully defeat the LTTE terrorism and what was required now was development of the country.

"The barrier to the country’s development was the prevalence of bribery, corruption and vice. My ambition is to establish a clean administration free of bribery, corruption and all types of vice," he told the prelates and requested their blessings to achieve success at the election.

Most Venerable Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thero of Malwatte told General Fonseka that he (prelate) appreciated the performance of General Fonseka in defeating terrorism.

"You did your duty well and President Mahinda Rajapaksa too was pleased with your performance and appointed you to a high position," he said.

"We are aware that you could have retired even earlier, at least one and a half years ago. We wish you success in your endeavour," the prelate added.

The Mahanayake of Asgiriya, Sri Buddharakkitha Thero said, "Your service in defeating LTTE terrorism was remarkably excellent. We were of the opinion that you would live a retired life after retirement from service."

Sarath Fonseka later told the media at Asgiriya Vihare that amity among the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities was of paramount importance, for the development of the country.

The second phase of victory is economic development, he said.

Fonseka said that same mouths that praised him over the success against terrorism were now slinging mud on him but that mud would return to them forthwith.

With General Fonseka were UNP, Secretary General Tissa Attananayake, MPS Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana, Lakshman Kiriella, Renuka Herath and Provincial Council Members L. Jayawardana, Chitra Manthilaka, Shanthini Kongahage, Chanaka Ilapperuma, former Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne, Kandy Municipal Councillors Kesara Senanayake and Raja Pushpakumara.

Wimal attacks Fonseka
  2009-12-01

National Freedom Front leader and parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa yesterday described common Presidential candidate General Fonseka’s first ever press conference as one of baseless and contradictory statements.

Weerawansa speaking to the media, at the party’s Battaramulla office yesterday, disputed General Fonseka’s claim that he was the common candidate and said he is a candidate of the United National Front(UNF). "He first said that he would abolish the executive Presidency and thereafter his statements were contradictory to his claim of abolishing the executive presidency", Weerawansa said. (Read More)

  2009-12-01

The JVP which kicked off its campaign for General Sarath Fonseka yesterday, came out with details as to what would happen if he emerges victorious at the coming presidential election stating that the Parliament would be dissolved on January 28 if the General is elected while he would be sworn in on January 27.

UNF partner Ashoka Suraweera to contest separately
  2009-12-01

National Defence Front leader Ashoka Suraweera who was placed fourth at the last Presidential Election told the Daily News yesterday that his political party aligned with the UNP-led National Freedom Front would withdraw from it and that he would be contesting the election as a candidate without affiliation to any other party.

He said he had a voter base and was therefore contesting the Presidential poll.

The UNF at present had 14 constituent political parties but the NDF was a party to that coalition but the Central Committee of the party would make the decision about the Presidential poll next week, he noted.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake last week in Kandy said the UNF that was backing Sarath Fonseka comprised 14 political parties but with the pull out announced by NDF leader, it would now be a coalition of 13 political parties.

Govt. continues to obstruct holding JVP rally
  2009-11-30

After the government manipulated the police to cancel their rally to be held at Ananda Samarakone Arena at Nugegoda on the 30th under the theme "Let’s build people’s power against frenzy of the executive, nepotism and hunger for power" for which all necessary permission had been obtained, The JVP had taken measures to hold the rally at Hyde Park in Colombo on the same day.

JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunneththi states even after measures taken to cancel the permission given to hold the rally at Nugegoda, the government continues to obstruct holding the rally. The latest incident is that the police have issued notice on JVP Member for Jayawardenepura-Kotte Municipality Kasun Dhanushka Perera, who went to the police station to get license to use public address system for the rally, to appear in court on the 30th the day the rally is to be held. The notice has been issued under the heading "regarding the use of public address system."

Meanwhile, a group of thugs who had come in a double cab bearing reg. no 59-7185 belonging to Ports Authority had threatened a group of JVP activists who were pasting posters announcing the rally. Despite there were police officers in the vicinity, they had acted as if they had not seen the incident. A complaint no. 364/264/CIB2 has been lodged with the police though no action has been taken yet.

Mr. Sunil Handunneththi said the deplorable state the government has fallen down could be seen from such incidents. He said such threats or obstacles would not prevent the voice of the JVP adding that the JVP had carried out its political activities without any fear during more oppressive periods. He said JVP considers Mahinda Rajapakse not as a giant but a mere dwarf.

Former Army Commander and Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka announcing his candidacy for the forthcoming presidential election under the ‘Swan’ symbol said yesterday his main aim was to abolish the Executive Presidency and also elaborated on the lessons to be learnt from the 13th Amendment.

He told a well-attended news conference at the JAIC Towers in Colombo that he would do everything possible to weed out corruption, to re-establish democracy and restore law and order in Sri Lanka soon after he was sworn in as President.

General Fonseka said that no sooner he assumes office he would take steps to implement the 17th Amendment and do a thorough study of the 13th Amendment.

“The circumstances at the time the 13th amendment was introduced and those prevailing now are different. We can most certainly learn from the steps taken in the past; but that no community should demand for undue powers,” he said and added that he was ready to dirty his hands for the purpose of cleaning up the country. Im not prepared to handover the country liberated from terrorism to a dictator Gen. Fonseka
  2009-11-30

“While I was serving in the SL Army I gave two promises. One was that I would not leave the war to be continued by another Commander of the Army after me. The other was I would not allow Prabakaran’s ‘Mahaweera’ speech to be heard in this country hereafter. I have fulfilled both these promises. Now, I am not prepared to hand over this country that has been liberated with tremendous sacrifices to an autocrat. Instead, I am prepared to fulfill another service that the country asks from me,” said Gen. Sarath Fonseka, the common candidate to contest the presidential election.  He said this at a press conference held at Jaik Hilton Tower in Colombo today morning. Gen. Fonseka, who came before the public as the common candidate for the presidential election for the first time said, “I fulfilled both promises I made to the country. This would confirm to you that I fulfill my promises. The war was won due to the dedication and sacrifices made by the valiant soldiers and officers of the Security Forces. The cooperation of the masses was another positive factor for this victory. It is this coorporation from the masses that brought victory to the Nation. I unpretentiously feel happy for being a shareholder of this victory by giving leadership to the SL Army. However, I have no intention of becoming a king or a hero as a result of the military victory achieved.
