Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian M.K. Sivajilingam said yesterday he was ready to contest the Jaunary 26 presidential election as the common Tamil candidate if his party took such a decision. Mr. Sivajilingam who is noted for his controversial remarks during the war period said he believed the Tamil people should not support either of the two main presidential candidates and added that this election would give the Sinhala people the opportunity to decide who their war hero was. UDA pasting Mahinda s expectations |
| |
2009-12-08 |
| |
In the morning we reported that posters of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaske’s election campaign are being pasted using Road Development Authority (RDA). Our reporters have been able to take photographs of employees of RDA pasting posters at Matara town using vehicles of RDA. These are some photographs taken at Matara. When inquired from employees they said their higher officials had asked them to paste posters last night but they opted to paste them today as it was too difficult for them to paste them at night. They further said despite heavy work they have to do, they had to engage in pasting posters as higher officials pressurize them to do so.

Govt. denies Fonsekas allegations |

Countering allegations made by opposition common candidate, General Sarath Fonseka that the refusal to accept a shipload of weaponry imported by Sri Lanka Logistics and Technologies Ltd (SLTL) had triggered the fall out with the government which yesterday claimed it was actually the other way around. A weekend newspaper quoting General Fonseka claimed that the reason for the differences between the government and General Fonseka was the vetoing of a multi million dollar proposal to purchase further large quantities of artillery shells from China to the value of 300 million US dollars by Lanka Logistics & Technologies Ltd. – a state owned public liability company operating under the Ministry of Defence under the chairmanship of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Cabinet spokesman and Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa told a news briefing at the Information Department that it was the Army under the command of General Fonseka that had placed the US$ 300 million order without the knowledge of the SLTL. “STLT Chairman Gotabhaya Rajapapksa did not have a clue about this order. The ship load arrived at the Port of Colombo after the conclusion of the humanitarian operations. Therefore, a huge load of artillery shells to this magnitude was not necessary and the Defence Ministry refused the load of ammunition and sent the ship back,” Minister Yapa said. The sole purpose of setting up of the STLT was to prevent the involvement of a third party in military purchases. This government after assuming office found that millions if not billions of dollars had been paid as commissions to arms dealers in the past. The STLT was established on a suggestion of Mr. Rajapaksa himself, the minister said.

Senior members of UNP unhappy over common candidate for Sri Lanka presidential polls |

2009-12-07 |

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party is reportedly losing some of its senior members due to the party's decision to support General (Retd.) Sarath Fonseka for the upcoming presidential polls instead of fielding its own candidate. The government supporters say a split in the party is imminent as some senior members of the party were absent at the UNP convention held in Welisara yesterday. UNP National Organizer, S. B. Dissanayake, Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando, former Deputy Mayor of Colombo Azath Sally and some other senior members did not attend the meeting. Meanwhile, a Daily Mirror online report said S.B. Dissanayake met President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Hanguranketta today and he is to hold a media briefing tomorrow to announce his stand. Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando earlier said that party's decision to support Sarath Fonseka as the common candidate under the swan symbol has made party stalwarts unhappy. This is the first time the UNP is not fielding a candidate under the elephant symbol.

Ranil W told the UNP at their special conference that this coming presidential election, “is a referendum for the people to decide whether they want to maintain this ‘Royal family’(meaning the Rajapaksa family) or chase them way.” He had, according to S/Times (06 Dec) told the conference, “You have to decide whether your family is more important or the ‘Royal family’ is more important.”
Gen Sarath F addressing the same UNP conference had told, “You will remember that the President promised to abolish the executive presidency but that pledge was not fulfilled. I did not come to politics to build up my family or become the richest family in Asia. You will know in the future who are the people robbing the country.”

The Secret Behind Pillayans Double Cross |
| |
2009-12-07 |
| |
The Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) opted to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the upcoming Presidential elections, barely two days after the party decided to withhold support to the President. We published a news quoting Sunday Times, last week about the major setback of UPFA. Last week’s exclusive front page report in the Sunday Times about the decision by the TMVP not to join the political campaign to re-elect President Rajapaksa triggered off a string of new developments, but the TMVP has not contradicted its report.Last Sunday, the state-run Independent Television Network, the government’s official website news.lk and the heavily pro-Government Ada Derana SMS news service were quick to claim that the report was wrong. They quoted TMVP leader and Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan as saying the report was incorrect and the TMVP would support Mr. Rajapaksa. The Sunday Times says, until yesterday neither Mr. Chandrakanthan nor his party’s General Secretary, Edwin Silva Kailasaraja, who was the source for the report, spoke to the Sunday Times to make any comment on the report.

If UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is not strong enough to contest the Presidential Election to be held on January 26 as the leader of the party he should nominate a candidate who has the strength to give leadership to the UNP without selecting Sarath Fonseka who was the choice of the JVP, Kurunegala district UNP Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando said yesterday.
