Will lead to polls rigging at the presidential election says CaFFE |
| |
2009-12-11 |
| |
The Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFFÉ) warned yesterday that non marking of national identity card numbers of 2.6 million voters in the electoral lists would lead to rigging at the upcoming presidential election. CaFFÉ media spokesman Keerthi Tennakoon told a news conference yesterday that most of the voters whose identity card numbers were missing from the lists were from North and the East. Mr. Tennakoon said the Department of Registration of Persons should make a note of this and determine whether these persons were without the identity cards. He said the only solution for this problem was to issue temporary identity cards for these persons. However, Mr. Tennakoon explained it was questionable as to how these identity cards could be issued in time for the presidential election as there was only 46 days more for the election. (Read More)

ABOLISH PREFERENTIAL VOTING SYSTEM NOT EXECUTIVE PRESIDENCY |
| |
2009-12-11 |
| |
The slogan of abolishing the executive presidency has hit the news headlines again. For that purpose a common candidate is contesting for the upcoming presidential elections. The concept of a common candidate is however not relevant to the presidential election system in Sri Lanka. The presidential election is conducted under a preferential voting system. The voter can mark three preferences as 1, 2, & 3 in the ballot paper according to his/her wish. The candidate, if any, who receives more than one-half of the first preference, is declared elected as President. Where no candidate has received more than one-half of the first preference, candidates who received the highest and second highest number of such votes will stay in the competition and other candidates will be eliminated from the competition.
